A question we see often is "Why are there 3 registries?" Or the comment "I wish there was just one registry" Guess what? We agree. In a nutshell, there are 3 registries for the Olde Englsih Babydoll Southdown because somewhere along the line, some breeders thought they’d like a different look to the Babydoll breed and that it’d be better managed as an organization rather than by an individual/ family. So the 2nd registry was created. Those steadfast to the original registry & breed standard were put in a lurch a few years ago when the original registry was not communicating with paying members through breeding & then a whole lambing season. A number of these breeders didn’t want to join the 2nd registry (or couldn’t if they had spotted sheep), so the 3rd registry was created as an orginazation with the original registry’s breed standard & allowances to save the lineage/purebred status of those sheep ... and then the original was sold to another private ...

One of the questions or concerns we have heard for BSSBA's Grade Up program is that it takes a lot of time - true! It's a process that does take some time.  This example lineage chart is a visual flow chart of the BSSBA Grade Up program: As you can see from the visual, after getting an unpapered ewe approved to be a "foundation ewe", it will take about 4 - 5 generations of recorded ewe lambs bred to BSSBA registered purebred rams before the offspring, all those generations out, can be considered to be registered* with BSSBA.  The thought process behind this several generation process is that there is a chance the unpapered foundation ewe could be a well-disquised mix. So it takes several generations of breeding to registered, purebred rams for the offspring down the line to be considered pure. The mission of Babydoll Southdown Sheep Breeders Association & registry (BSSBA) to strictly preserve Mock standards has not changed. Remaining active, interested and invested in the best for the Babydoll Southdown breed, we have taken input from members, reviewed other American and UK registries to update the BSSBA standards: BSSBA Breed Standard We announced this by email and in our members-only Facebook group a few weeks, but wanted to bring it up again in this post as we announce something else... This is all very new and in making the announcement, we didn't realize so many (very good) questions would be generated so quickly. Here are some quick answers to some of the questions asked earlier on Facebook... Will one be able to register their sheep if they only have the copies of the COR?  Yes, any animals that were previously registered through OEBR and the off spring of two OEBR registered animals will be eligible for BSSBA registry. Is this a completely separate & new registry? Yes, it is a completely separate registry and not affiliated with any other Southdown Babydoll registry.
